The island has a unique butterfly shape you can see if you fly over it. The western part is known as Mésa Nisí (inner island) and the eastern part as Éxo Nisí (outer island).

Panagia Portaitissa church (from the 18th century) below the Venetian Guerini Castle (from the 13th century!). The church is one of the most beautiful in the Dodecanese Islands, with a wood-carved, gilded iconostasis (wall of icons).
