Nestled in the Pindus Mountains of northern Greece, Zagori villages or Zagorochoria is a cluster of 46 traditional villages collectively known for their stunning stone architecture, dramatic landscapes, and rich cultural heritage. These hidden gems offer the perfect escape for nature lovers, hikers, and history enthusiasts. Whether you're looking for challenging hikes, cozy village stays, or authentic Greek cuisine, Zagori has something for every traveler.
Did you know? The name Zagori comes from the Slavic language and means "beyond the mountains" reflecting the region's isolation and beauty.
In Megalo Papigo Village: Megalo Papigo is the biggest village in the cluster and boasts several boutique hotels and guesthouses. The Papaevangelou Hotel is particularly renowned for its warm hospitality and attention to detail, making it an excellent choice for visitors looking for comfort with a traditional twist. The panoramic views of the mountains add to its allure. Avragonio, known for blending tradition and modern comfort, is another great accommodation option for travelers wanting to explore Zagori's rustic side while enjoying modern amenities.
In Aristi Village: If you’re after a slightly more luxurious and secluded experience, the Aristi Mountain Resort is a hidden gem, offering comfort, great food, and plenty of nearby activities like hiking and rafting. Its serene atmosphere is perfect for a relaxing getaway amidst nature.
Zagori is famous for its hearty, traditional Greek cuisine, often prepared with local ingredients such as wild herbs, local cheeses, and meats. Every village has its culinary treasures, but here are a few places you shouldn’t miss:
Dilofo Village - Lithos (Takis' Place): A rustic gem, this restaurant in Dilofo is known for serving delicious, homestyle dishes prepared with fresh, local ingredients. The cozy atmosphere is as inviting as the food and we make sure to visit every time.
Vradeto Village: A village perched high on the mountain, where you can enjoy local pies, lamb, and veal in family-run tavernas. The views from the village are spectacular, making it a great spot to enjoy a long, leisurely lunch. Visit Skala tou Vradetou which is the highest traditional kafeneio in Greece at 1.340m.
Artisti Village - En Aristi: Originally a local café, En Aristi was refurbished into a restaurant while maintaining its Zagorian charm. The menu features local dishes like pies, bean soups, and meats cooked to perfection, reflecting the best of Zagorian cuisine.
Papigo Villages: Both Mikro (small) and Megalo (big) Papigo have excellent dining options. For a more refined experience, go to Pantheon, especially if you’re staying nearby. Sterna Café in Mikro Papigo is a must-visit offering a taste of traditional sweets, including halva ice cream, coffee, and local products that also make great souvenirs.
No trip to Zagori is complete without indulging in Zagorian pies—crispy, quiche-like delicacies filled with seasonal greens, herbs, and cheese. Other notable dishes include stewed beans, charcoal-grilled lamb or veal, and herb-infused salads. Don’t forget to try the tsipouro, a local digestif that pairs well with the region’s flavors.
Zagori is a hiker's paradise, with trails that range from easy to challenging, all offering breathtaking views of the natural surroundings.
Drakolimni (Dragon Lake): A more difficult hike, but one that is absolutely worth the effort. The trail starts early in the morning to avoid the sun during the exposed parts of the journey. You can stop at the Astraka Refuge, where you’ll find food, water, and even a place to rest for the night if needed. If you're fit enough to complete the round trip in a day, it's possible, but expect a long, rewarding hike filled with stunning scenery, wild herbs, birds, and even herds of wild horses.
Vikos Gorge: One of the most famous hiking trails in Greece, the Vikos Gorge trail begins in Monodendri and ends at the village of Vikos. Vikos Gorge is one of the deepest gorges in the world. Part of theVikos-Aoos National Park, it features towering cliffs and stunning views, making it a must-visit for hikers and nature lovers.
Near the end of the hike, you can cool off in the ice-cold waters of the Voidomatis River. There’s also an abandoned 16th-century monastery hidden nearby, worth exploring if you're up for some off-trail adventure.
For adventure seekers, rafting down the crystal-clear waters of the Voidomatis River is an exhilarating experience. The river winds through lush forests and stone bridges, and its waters remain refreshingly cold even in the height of summer. Rafting tours are available for all experience levels, making it a perfect activity for families or groups of friends.
Every year, Zagori hosts a marathon that draws athletes and nature lovers from across Greece and beyond. The well-marked trails used in the marathon can also be enjoyed by hikers year-round, offering some of the best ways to explore the region’s natural beauty. [Zagori Marathon Information]
