TRAVELING TO GREECE: EPIRUS, THE RUGGED NORTHWEST!

Epirus is a region in northwestern Greece, bordering Albania, known for its rugged mountain landscapes, traditional villages, and rich history. The modern Egnatia & Ionian Highways have made the regional capital of Ioannina much more accessible than when I was growing up, but the real beauty of Epirus is outside the towns. Go off the beaten track and discover some of the gems of this lovely region. Read on for my Top 3!

1. Visit the Zagori villages: This cluster of 46 traditional stone villages is known for its stunning natural beauty, with plenty of river-rafting and hiking for all. Read more about Vitsa in our earlier blog.

2. Explore the Vikos Gorge: This spectacular canyon is one of the deepest in the world and offers breathtaking views along the hike through.

3. Visit the ancient city of Dodona: This ancient Greek site was once home to an oracle and is known for its impressive theater and temple ruins. (The region is also known for its famous feta!).

Of course, Epirus also has a long coastline, with many beaches worth exploring, but the true beauty is in the craggy peaks and charming villages nestled throughout. Enjoy an authentic Greek adventure!
