TRAVELING TO GREECE: SAMOTHRAKI, A STUNNING GREEK ISLAND

Samothrace, or Samothráki in Greek, is one of the more remote, less developed islands, sitting in the northeastern Aegean Sea. Its lush landscape, ancient history, and magical vibe make it a popular destination for young people, campers & hikers. Samothraki's standout attraction - the 4th century BC Sanctuary of the Great Gods, a mystical site of rites, was the home of the famous statue, the Winged Victory, Nike of Samthráki, the original of which is in Paris' Louvre Museum.

The other big attraction on the island is the váthres, a series of natural rock pools that are formed by Samothráki's waterfalls and the springs of the Saos Mountain. The hike is fairly easy up to the first couple of pools, where families also stop and swim in the clear, cold waters. Once you start climbing higher, though, the crowds thin out and only the truly brave scramble up the rocks to find the most remote pools.

Food in Samothráki is a wonderful blend of 'surf & turf' - the island is famous for its roasted goat, thanks to the mountainous geography, but you can also find the typical seafood you'd enjoy on any Greek island. Venture into the interior villages for inexpensive hearty food that has all the flavor of locally homegrown produce.

Samothráki's wild and remote beauty draws a more bohemian crowd, not they typical 5-star tourist. In fact, proper hotels are scarce and most people rent apartments or rooms or simply camp on the beach or at the island's organized campground. You won't find sunbeds or umbrellas for rent, either, so bring your own or pick some up at one of the shops at the port of Kamariotissa, the island's commercial hub. The town of Chora, up the mountain, is a real charm, with cobblestoned streets and tavernas, and people also hang out down in Thermá, close to the váthres and the beach.

Don't be surprised if you come across people practicing yoga, taking in the mysticism and natural beauty, and simply enjoying a true Greek island experience, well off the beaten path. If all of this sounds tempting, do give Samothráki a try - you'll have an unforgettable experience!
